WORKSHOP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
=============================

Workshop Applied For*: SI-E: Scalable Network Infrastructure

Reason for Track Choice*
------------------------
We, at Millennium Villages Project, intend to expand our network infrastructure so as to increase the current Internet coverage in the cluster area. So I intend to be enlightened at the workshop on we can best manage our equipment to cope with the scaling up of our operations

TECHNICAL SKILLS
================

Unix User?*: true

How much have you used it?
--------------------------
Currently I manage health information systems (OpenMRS and ChildCount+) that are deployed on UNIX servers. But my role has since been expanded to systems administration of the other servers, routers and the gateway to ensure that their services are reliable and always available

Have you been a UNIX admin?*: true

Describe your experience (length of time, versions, etc.)
---------------------------------------------------------
I have used UNIX systems for nearly 3 1/2 (three and a half) years during which time I have used UNIX systems for development and deployment of applications (Java and Python) as well as systems administration for provision of services such as DNS, DHCP, NAT,Web, firewall setup (iptables) and network usage monitoring

Have you used/administered TCP/IP nets?*: true

Describe
---------
Currently, my tasks include network administration (IP addressing). All our networking equipement (routers and servers) run on UNIX/Linux (Ubuntu for the servers) that I am personally responsible for.

Have you set up and/or administered any of the following? Please give details

Bind or any other Nameservers*
------------------------------
Yes! Our gateway currently uses bind9 as the nameserver software for the entire network. However currently our gateway doubles as a firewall so I set it up as a caching nameserver

Mail Transport Agents (ex. Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, Qmail)*
-----------------------------------------------------------
Not yet

Mailing List Managers (e.g. Majordomo or other list manager)*
-------------------------------------------------------------
Not yet

Web Systems/Servers (e.g. Apache, IIS or other web server)*
------------------------------------------------------------
We run cherokee for our ChildCount+ mHealth application and Apache Tomcat for OpenMRS medical Record System (which I set up), then I use Apache for development and testing purposes (python + django web framework)

Have you configured or otherwise managed any of the following? Please give details.

Routers*
--------
Yes, I personally did initial configuration and currently doing the maintenance our gateway, servers and long-range Wifi routers that we use to connect to the field from the Mbarara head office

Switches*
---------
No, the switches were preconfigured by the distributors

Network Monitoring Systems*
----------------------------
Yes, configured ntop for bandwidth management. Currently setting up netams on the gateway for network traffic accounting and monitoring

Network Operations Center (NOC)*
--------------------------------
Not yet

ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES
======================================

A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and
responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data
networking activities in your country*
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
UNDP/Millennium Villages Project (MVP) is a Non-Governmental Organisation tasked with achieving the UN MDGs. I am the eHealth Specialist and I carry out maintenance of medical record systems as well as system and network administration duties such as monitoring of the network equipment

A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems,
networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization
to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Personally,I use Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat(10.10). In the field at Ruhiira, clients are running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10), at the Mbarara head office clients run WinXP. Networking equipment: routers run minimalized version of Ubuntu and all servers run Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04). Organisation connects to ISP (Infocom) through WiMax and Uganda's currently connected to the Internet using both Optic Fiber from the Kenyan Coast and Satellite (which is increasingly becoming a secondary form of connectivity)

Other: NGO MDGs

How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that my current tasks that include maintenance of applications (medical applications) deployed on UNIX/Linux machines, network and system administration tasks qualify me as a primary candidate for the Scalable Network Infrastructure track especially considering that we are to scale up operations for the next five years of the project

How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that it will help me make very informed decisions (from knowledge gained from the workshop combined with my experience) on how to configure current equipment, make recommendations for the procurement of robust scalable equipment to cope with the scaling up of operations for the second phase of the project as well as provision of guidance and recommendations to other organisations that I hope partner with and share my knowledge and experience

If you have previously attended AfNOG or INET Workshops for Developing Countries
Year and track you attended
---------------------------

A precise description of how you have used the training you have received in the past
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The significant advances in networking which have occurred in your country specifically
because of your knowledge and effort
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
======================

Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the
workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Requested aid to cover the attendance fees.

Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your
organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other
sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
My organisation will benefit from my training because I will directly implement the scaling up of network operations which knowledge and experience I intend to share with partner organisations such as government agencies with whom we work with. I have contacted my organisation and they will confirm the amount to be given only if my attendance is confirmed

How will the finances be paid?
